Boozing rat mommies
Make baby rat bones so weak
Poor baby rat bones

Beth Snow
University of British Columbia

I earned my PhD in 2006 from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC, Canada. My dissertation, entitled”The effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on endochondral bone development in the fetal rat,” showed that the effects of maternal alcohol intake on the long bone development of the fetus are independent of alcohol’s effects on general growth of the fetus, occur at doses lower than the doses which affect general growth, and that alcohol may affect the later, rather than the earlier, stages of long bone development.

Bad genes cause cancer.
Use computers to find them
and map their interactions.

Chris Miller
Baylor College of Medicine

Dissertation Title: Detection and integrative analysis of genomic aberrations in cancer
I develop computational methods for detect genetic aberrations from high-throughput genomic assays like microarrays and massively-parallel sequencing. We then use mutational patterns to place these genes into a functional context that can help us understand their role in cancer.

Shakespeare gives sorrow
words; so Alzheimer couples
too, can voice their loss.

Elena Schjavland
University of Connecticut

My dissertation at the School of Nursing seeks to answer if dementia couples endure chronic sorrow (different from depression and grief). I will test this middle range nursing theory of chronic sorrow and analyze the notable loss, disparity, sorrow, triggers and management. The temporality of the disease may reflect changes between the stages and increasing impaired functionality. Proposal? January 2011.

Blood got red, not thick
While the clone increased within
Bloody death awaits

Joseph Landman
Tel Aviv University

Thesis title: “The Relation between JAK2-V617F mutational load in Polycythemia Vera patients and the clinical characteristics of their disease”
Polycythemia Vera is a disease caused by a mutated clone of blood cells containing the JAK2-V617F mutation, which causes them to reproduce uncontrollably. As the clone gets bigger, the red cell mass in the blood stream also gets bigger. The study found that a bigger clone doesn’t increase the risk for thrombus formation while it does increase the risk for leukemia.

Is it ethical
To practice evidence-based
Psychiatric care?

Mona Gupta w/ Mary Seeman
University of Toronto

Dissertation Title: “Is Evidence-Based Psychiatric Practice Ethical Practice?: A Conceptual and Qualitative Study” (by Mona Gupta)
The thesis concludes that evidence-based psychiatric practice cannot be ethical practice by itself. Instead, it can play a small ethical role in clinical practice only if it is situated within the larger value structure of contemporary medicine and psychiatry. (Mary Seeman is Graduate Coordinator at the Institute of Medical Science, U. of Toronto).

Bacteria bind
To cells in lungs; but does it
Matter? I don’t know.

Rachel L. Robson
University of Kansas Medical Center

Dissertation title: “Streptococcus pneumoniae adherence to and activation of human lung cells” (2006).
Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria cause serious diseases like meningitis and pneumonia, but these bacteria also live harmlessly in the nasal passages of at least 20% of people without ever causing any symptoms. Some S. pneumoniae adhere to human lung cells very well, and there’s reason to think that this stickiness might lead to worse disease symptoms, but there’s no statistical correlation between stickiness of bacteria and outcomes in infected patients to back this up.

Web Relationships.
Seems like any other love
Not lonely or sad.

Yolanda Turner
Widener University

Dissertation title: An Exploratory Study of Individuals Involved in Computer Mediated Intimate Relationships.
The study investigated what characteristics might pertain to individuals who have on-line romantic relationships with people they have never seen face-to-face… and whether they perceive themselves as lonely or lacking off-line alternatives.

Conversations unspoken.
No reimbursement for truth.
Sexuality, stymied

Melanie Davis
Widener University, USA

Dissertation topic: Sexuality Education as Perceived by Therapists and Physicians: An Assessment of Attitudes about Sexuality Education and Interest in Referring Patients to Sexuality Educators.
Initial results indicate that physicians and family therapists feel neither prepared, inclined, nor reimbursed to discuss sexual health with patients, yet they would be willing to refer patients to sex educators if a) they knew how to find them, and b) insurance reimbursement were available for consultation.

Low scanning error

Choose your site wisely.

Shauna Dudley-Javoroski
The University of Iowa

My dissertation evaluated the validity and reliability of several  measurement techniques (paired-pulse muscle stimulation, peripheral quantitative computed tomography, and sonographic imaging) for quantifying musculoskeletal adaptation after spinal cord injury.  The haiku refers to the difficulty I encountered during sonographic imaging of paralyzed muscle that had undergone fibrotic changes and adipose deposition…some regions are superior to others for measuring muscle thickness.

Dissertation Haiku in the News!

           Doctoral Dissertations in Haiku
“One of my old professors liked to say that a poem isn’t any good unless you can explain it to a three-year-old. I never would have thought one could apply that same standard to a doctoral dissertation, but then I came across a brilliant little website called Dissertation Haiku.”
